Benjamin Short is a small time undercover cop. It has been six long years that he has done this job his own way. Solo, no partner, no backup. He took every assignment ever turned down by the rest of the precinct, and never worked a day towards moving up in the ranks. The dirt and grime of the city was where he lived, and there were some among the precinct's officers that whispered around about Benjamin going native. Getting in too deep, or losing himself to the underbelly of the city's crime.
Their opinions mattered about as much as last months news to Ben. He knew his numbers could not be argued with. The majority of his stings had gone off without a single hitch that he could be blamed for. It was his impressively unnerving ability to blend into the criminal crowd that left his coworkers on edge.
But they were right about one thing. Ben spent far too long on the other side. He had certain sympathies, potential compromises in his judgement. Because not all criminals were bad guys, and that opinion was a dangerous one for a cop to develop. Especially one who spent his life in the thick of the dens of thieves and worse.
It was a terrible weakness for an undercover cop, to have the moments hesitation that would mean the difference between life and death.
But then, Benjamin's step-father had always said he was destined to live up to his name.
